Why Space Sciences?

Some branches of Space Sciences are the oldest sciences, and most people got fascinated by them from an early age. We are always fascinated to know the unknown and driven to explore the unexplored. Our eagerness to explore the boundaries made us believe the sky is not the limit. Space Explorations helps us find the fundamental questions of our existence to discover the root causes of life. As per the Times of India, If you are among those who dream of making their mark in the field of space, you are in luck. Space exploration and related careers are an ever-expanding area with great potential for numerous future career specializations.

Why Space Foods?

Globally space industry is booming in terms of both Space Exploration and Space Tourism. Firstly, Space Exploration is becoming more advanced day by day. Most nations and companies are focussing on deep space missions and targeting to land on Mars. This race between nations/companies requires cutting-edge technology. As of now, the Mars round trip takes 15-18 months.

Rocket technology is not just all in achieving deep space missions. Nutritious food is also very very important, we say it's the primary requirement. Space tourism is just taking off. These small trips will become day trips gradually.

Whether you explore or experience, food is the primary requirement.

For information, the Indian Space industry is growing at a CAGR of 48%. The global space industry will hit 1.4 $ Billion market by 2030, says Bank of America.

What is Space Food?

Space food is a type of food product created and processed for consumption by astronauts during missions to outer space ( beyond the earth). The food has specific requirements of providing balanced nutrition for individuals working in space while being easy and safe to store, prepare and consume in the machinery-filled weightless environments of crewed spacecraft.

The biggest differences between space food and regular food are in the packaging and design. Space food must be carefully contained so it doesn't float around in the low-gravity (microgravity) environment. Even something as simple as a few crumbs can become deadly in low gravity. Loose pieces of food can become lodged in shuttle vents or can waft into an astronaut's nose or mouth and pose a choking or breathing hazard. Liquids can float away as well, so drinks like coffee, orange juice, apple cider and tea are packaged as powders. Astronauts add water to the contained drinks to rehydrate them.

I would like to thank the organization for arranging this wonderful internship on Space Food. The two months journey was filled with learnings and insights on space food, history, designing meal plans as per the nutritional requirements and astronaut's body type and finally followed by a product development idea. Thanks to ASTRO and the mentor for guiding us with their profound knowledge.

Food is the primary requirement for humans, even in space.
It is as important as the space craft engine.
